The claims behind it
After bilateral injection of AAV5-CaMKIIa-eYFP (or eNpHR3.0-eYFP) into the anterior insula, eYFP-labelled axon terminals were found in the basolateral amygdala. Quantification of nine confocal images from a representative animal showed the mean eYFP intensity was significantly greater in BLA than in CeA (paired t-test, t(8) = 8.04, p < 0.001).

Cre-dependent ChR2-mCherry expressed in glutamatergic neurons of the insular cortex of CaMKII-Cre mice produced labelled axonal fibres in the BLA, where the optical fibre was placed.

Agranular and dysgranular insular injections labelled the intermediate and superficial strata of the lateral basolateral subdomain and the inner medial basolateral subdomain.

Injection of the retrograde tracer CTB-488 into the BLA labelled a population of neurons in the insular cortex, which were subsequently targeted for whole-cell recording as BLA-projecting IC neurons.
